Heirloom Garlic Available at Abbott's Garlic Farm
Svea:
Marbled Purple Stripe
Hardneck Garlic
Our Garlic is 100% Organically Grown and perfect for planting or table stock. This season we are offering two varieties, Svea and Music, with 3 new additions coming summer, 2025.
Svea is a Landrace Hardneck garlic from western Russia, where conditions range from are cold and snowy to hot and arid, and it has made this cultivar very hardy. It can take a wide variety of conditions, from snow cover fields to hot spring temperatures and will still produce delicious, well sized bulbs. The cloves are some of the biggest we have seen, sometimes over an inch wide and an inch tall, with beautiful deep purple wrappers.
Svea is a Marbled Purple Stripe Hardneck Garlic, a family of Garlics prized for their strong, robust flavors, large easily peeled cloves, and unmatched roasting abilities.
When roasted, Svea becomes sweet, nutty, and deliciously caramelized. Svea grows well in climates from Canada to southern regions like ours in Northern California. Give this variety a try in both the garden and in your favorite dishes. Please click the link for ordering options.
Music:
Porcelain Hardneck Garlic
By all accounts, Music is a Landrace cultivar from Italy and was likely traded and shared across the region for centuries before it's recent introduction into Canada around 1980. Romans and Grecians considered garlic more for medicinal purposes than culinary, and records suggest their use of garlic within the region throughout the ancient world. Today Music is one of the best-known historic cultivars and is used widely across Europe and Canada.
Music is said to have the "Perfect" garlic flavor, meaning it is unbeatable for traditional garlic uses, like Italian dishes.
Music is in a category of Garlics called Porcelain Hardnecks, a group known for their beautiful glossy exterior, their plump, easy to peel cloves, and their storability, which can be 5-8 months under good conditions. Music can grow just about anywhere and is a forgiving plant for a first-time grower. Please click the link to order.
Coming Summer, 2025
Metechi:
Marbled Purple Stripe
Hardneck Garlic
Metechi is a very special cultivar, and one of our favorites here at Abbott's Garlic Farm. Metechi is a Landrace Hardneck garlic from the region east of the black Sea spanning up through central Asia into what is now Uzbekistan. This Landrace more than others we have tried has retained its untamed historic ferocity. The flavors are bold, becoming intense before releasing its heat for a complex flavorful finish. Not all landrace and heirloom garlic cultivars are hot, but this one sure is. If you love that intense garlic experience, Metechi is the garlic for you.
Siberian:
Marbled Purple Stripe
Hardneck Garlic
Siberian is a very special Landrace that comes from the Kamchatka Peninsula, located on the eastern edge of Russia along the Bering Sea. The Kamchatka Peninsula is one of the last wild and remote locations on earth, where the world's largest Grizzly Bears live and where populations of fish and animals still exist like they did centuries before. It is said that travelling fisherman discovered the bulbs and traded them for other goods as they worked their way home.
Siberian may be our favorite cultivar, although it is very difficult to choose just one. Siberian has one of the most complex, delicious flavors of any garlic, yet with very little heat (most seasons). The flavors range from sweet to floral and fade before any lingering heat develops. For this reason, Siberian is our favorite for eating raw on salads, or as an uncooked topper to various dishes. Having a flavorful but mild garlic option opens us new culinary opportunities, and you will find many uses for Siberian that would otherwise be too overpowering with traditional garlic.
Russian (River) Red:
Rochambo Hardneck Garlic
Russian Red, or as we call it here along the Russian River in Northern California, Russian (River) Red, is a Landrace Garlic from Eastern Europe, with a historic range likely from northwest Russia to Siberia. This garlic was brought to North America by Russian Immigrants during the last century and has endured because of its rich flavor that sweetens slightly as it cooks. Russian Red is a cultivar within the Rochambo family, a category that is said to produce the very best tasting garlics (although that is difficult to decide!). Rochambos have more cloves that porcelain or Marbled Purple Stripe garlics, usually 8 to 10 per bulb.
